BARC Connects brings RCPS online with high-speed Internet service
Millboro, VA – BARC Electric Cooperative (BARC) announced Wednesday its subsidiary, BARC Connects, completed its largest commercial fiber implementation in the service area. Beginning July 1st, the Rockbridge County Public Schools (RCPS) system is live on the BARC network, which in some areas utilizes the existing RANA network infrastructure.
As BARC brings fiber-to-the-home service to local residents, it also wanted to ensure local schools have the same access, so it designed the network to connect to every school in the county. In today’s world, reliable Internet access is heavily used by educators to instruct, and by students to complete coursework, homework and research.
With the project completed, BARC CEO Mike Keyser stated that, “It is vital to our children’s success that they have access to broadband both at home and at school. I’m sure teachers are excited to start off the 2018-19 school year with faster, more reliable, local service. We take great pride in knowing that we are providing world-class fiber Internet service to one of our local school systems and are looking forward to connecting more schools as the project area expands.”
BARC is proud to have growing opportunities to partner with RCPS related to STEM academies, workforce development and services to provide greater opportunities to students in the community. As Mike Keyser noted, “We believe this partnership is the beginning of something that will better prepare our students and community for the future ahead, ensuring that our students are given the same access to high-speed Internet as those elsewhere in the country.”

BARC Connects staff and Rockbridge County Public Schools staff worked together to ensure a smooth transition of service that did not cause interruption. BARC Connects General Manager, Gary Sickler commented, “The BARC Connects team is very happy to have worked with the RCPS IT and Administrative staff on this project. The migration over to our network went well and now all school locations have faster access to both internal and external Internet resources.”
RCPS is comprised of four elementary schools, one middle school and one high school, along with additional administrative facilities. The student body is currently made up of approximately 2,500 students.
BARC Electric Cooperative is a customer-owned electric cooperative serving 13,000 residents, farms and businesses across five counties in Virginia.
